Midlife is a season of profound change, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s a time when many men and women begin to feel the weight of shifting identities, aging bodies, and new responsibilities.

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life marked by the end of menstrual cycles. It unfolds in three stages: Perimenopause, when hormones begin to fluctuate and symptoms first appear; Menopause, defined as 12 consecutive months without a period; and Postmenopause, the years after menopause when symptoms may ease but hormonal changes continue to influence health.
One of the most common experiences during this transition is a shift in the body’s temperature regulation. Hot flushes, sudden waves of heat in the face, neck, or chest, can cause sweating, a rapid heartbeat, and discomfort that lasts seconds or minutes. When these occur at night, they become night sweats, often disrupting sleep and leaving women feeling fatigued or irritable the next day. These symptoms are driven by declining estrogen, which affects how the body manages heat.
Sleep disturbances are another hallmark of menopause. Hormonal fluctuations, night sweats, anxiety, and mood changes can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, leading many women to wake frequently or feel unrested. Over time, this contributes to persistent fatigue, especially as estrogen and progesterone continue to decline.
Cognitive changes, often described as brain fog, may also appear. Forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, and mental fatigue are common and can be intensified by stress, poor sleep, and emotional shifts.
Many women also notice weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, due to hormonal changes, a slowing metabolism, and reduced muscle mass.
Emotional wellbeing can be affected as well. Fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels influence neurotransmitters like serotonin, which regulate mood. As a result, mood swings, irritability, sadness, or anxiety may become more frequent. Life stressors and sleep disruptions can amplify these feelings.
Menopause can also influence digestion. Hormonal changes may lead to bloating, constipation, or shifts in appetite, while slower metabolism and stress can add to digestive discomfort. These symptoms often improve with mindful eating, hydration, and lifestyle adjustments.
Changes in sexual health are another common part of the journey. Lower estrogen and testosterone levels can reduce libido and cause vaginal dryness or discomfort during intercourse. Fatigue, sleep issues, and body image concerns may also affect intimacy. Open communication, emotional support, and lifestyle changes can help restore confidence and connection.
Menopause is a significant transition, but understanding what’s happening in the body can make the experience less overwhelming. With awareness, support, and healthy habits, women can navigate this stage with greater ease, resilience, and self‑compassion.

Many men are surprised to learn that they, too, experience hormonal changes as they age. Often called “male menopause,” andropause refers to the gradual decline in testosterone that typically begins in the mid‑40s and becomes more noticeable after age 50.
Unlike women, men don’t experience a sudden hormonal shift; instead, testosterone levels decrease slowly over time, which can lead to physical, emotional, and sexual changes.
This natural decline can affect men in different ways. Some barely notice it, while others experience symptoms that disrupt daily life. Common signs include low energy, reduced muscle strength, weight gain, sleep disturbances, irritability, decreased libido, and changes in mood or motivation. These shifts are normal, but they can feel confusing or overwhelming if men don’t understand what’s happening.
Andropause is manageable. Lifestyle choices play a major role in how men cope. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, good sleep habits, and stress‑reduction practices can significantly improve wellbeing. Reducing alcohol, avoiding smoking, and staying socially and emotionally connected also help stabilize mood and energy levels. For men whose symptoms are more intense, speaking with a healthcare provider is important. A doctor can check testosterone levels, rule out other conditions, and discuss treatment options when appropriate.
Andropause isn’t something to fear or ignore. It’s a natural stage of life that invites men to pay closer attention to their health, habits, and emotional wellbeing. With awareness and the right support, men can navigate this transition with strength, clarity, and renewed purpose.
